Volleyball in the 90s at Regis High School
By: Abby Searles
In 1995, Regis high school’s volleyball team took their victories to playoffs and, although not winning the second game, came farther than most RHS volleyball teams. Volleyball has changed dramatically from the dynamic of the 90s to what it is now.
First, let’s learn about the game to visualize Regis volleyball’s history. In the 90s, volleyball jerseys were basketball shorts, large turtle-shell-looking kneepads, and sleeveless tops. In recent years at Regis, the volleyball team’s uniforms are sleeved jersey tops, black spandex, and corresponding kneepads to the shoes. Not only were the uniforms different, but the game rules also changed. In the 90s, sets only went to 15 points, and the highest school volleyball teams played up to three sets. They also used Side-out scoring, where points could only be won by the team serving the ball in a rally. If the team not serving won the rally, they wouldn’t get recognition. In 1999, the USA Volleyball Rules of the Game Commission officially changed the scoring to what is now used: Rally Scoring.
In 1989, the RHS volleyball team went to the playoffs, and they were the only team to make it to the playoffs until 1995. In 1995, Coach Adams and Coach Heli led the Varsity Regis Volleyball team to the Playoffs. The team won the first playoff game against Salem Academy but lost against Gervais. “With one common goal in mind, we came together, worked together, and stayed together. I am proud to have been part of this team. I made many friendships that will last me a lifetime and had many memories I will never forget,”- Jamie Young. By the end of the season, Lady Rams won 17 games and lost 8.
Another excellent year for the volleyball team was with the team of 1992, which improved significantly throughout the season. The group started with only three wins in the first half of the season, but they brought it up to 9 wins, beating most of the teams they had lost to. The Most Valuable Player, Darcie McDougall, made the first-team All-Conference and was one of the two returning Varsity members of that season. Although young athletes, the team still improved skillfully as the season progressed.
In conclusion, volleyball rules, uniforms, and the whole dynamic has changed from what it was like in the 90s. And although there is no championship under our belt, some teams have been close. Volleyball at Regis has always been a fun, faith-filled sport, and as a volleyball player myself, I hope to continue the legacy and one day make it to the Championship.
