Volleyball at Regis in 2003

By: Lily Jepsen

Regis High School has a long history in volleyball. The sport has also had a wide variety of players throughout the years. For our final essay in rampage, we were assigned to write a lengthy article about a topic having to do with the history of Regis high school. The class looked through the school’s yearbooks, researching interesting topics and time periods to write about. I chose to write about the 2003 Regis volleyball season.

At the time, Regis high did not have a Junior varsity. The team’s roster was one of the smallest we´ve ever had. The girls playing on the team in 2003 were Carrie Brand, Audrey Meyer, Marrisa Mcdowell, Kara Boschler, Kellie Roberts, Meagan Kintz, Kristi Beggs, Lisa Riesterer, Sarah Kintz, and Shannon Buchheit. The team’s coach was Jill Frederic, and Carmen Gonzalez was the stat keeper.

During the 2003 season, Regis only suffered two losses, against Corbett high school and the Corbett tournament. The team also played City Christian, Santiam high, Chemawa High School, Salem Academy, Gervais, Scio, Kennedy, Western Mennonite, Colton, and Blanchet, all of which were won. After winning the game versus Kennedy, Regis was sent to state as first seed.

Before each game, the girls had a specific routine that was executed. After dismissal at three, they would occupy from then till four o’clock to style the team’s hair. Around five, the team would partake in chapel, or team prayer, which we still do today at Regis. At five fifteen the girls would take time to relax and cheer. At quarter to five the team would finally start their green and gold warm-ups, salute, and prayer. Then, it was finally game time.

Volleyball is a very special sport to me, so it brings me a lot of joy knowing we have such a rooted history of it here at Regis. From the team dynamic to gameplay, our school has always excelled in keeping up the spirit of being a true Ram and displaying that in how we play. My hopes and goals during my time here are to keep that spirit alive and encourage others to do the same.
