Video Game Review: Deep Rock Galactic
By: Liam McSorley
Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative first-person shooter video game developed by Danish studio Ghost Ship Games and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. Deep Rock Galactic was fully released on May 13, 2020, for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One after its early access release on February 28, 2018. The game’s main point is to mine resources on an alien planet, called Hoxxes 4. The main objective may change, depending on the mission, from simply mining a blue ore called Morkite, to finding crystals and riding a massive drill into a crystal geode.
There are four classes to play as, each with its strengths and weaknesses. The roles are Gunner, Driller, Engineer, and Scout. Gunner is the main damage per second class, armed with a revolver and handheld minigun. He is also who you play as in the tutorial. Driller does just what you’d assume, and drills. Along with the drills, he has a Mauser-like pistol and a flamethrower. Engineer is a very flexible and viable class, with the ability to place down platforms for the rest of the team. He is equipped with a shotgun and grenade launcher and can place down automated turrets. Last, but not least, is Scout. Scout has a double-barrel shotgun an assault rifle, and a flare gun. He is also equipped with a grappling hook to get hard-to-reach ores.
Overall Deep Rock Galactic, also known as DRG, is a great game. I cannot recommend it enough. The developers and player base are great people, and the game is just fun. You play against alien insects in the game, not people, so that way the game isn’t extremely hard to play casually, like games like Fortnite or Call of Duty. If you have a PC, Xbox One, S, X, PS4, or PS5, I would suggest you give it a try.
