Track and Field
By Stuart McLaughlin
There was a track meet on April 11, 2024, at Santiam High School. This meet was between Santiam, Salem Academy, Crosshill Christian, East Linn, and Regis Rams. The weather was slightly windy and was about forty degrees. The track’s location was relatively beautiful, with mountains surrounding it. This was one of the last non-competitive meets as athletes were getting settled into the events they wanted to do. After this week, it’s all about mastering your events and going for personal records and placements for the big competitions. There were many outstanding performances from the throwers, jumpers, and runners, including Clara Persons winning the 200-meter dash and Daisy Hernandez winning the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Emmett, Grant, Eli, and Abe also won the throwers relay.
There were some pretty fun moments, including Crosshill Christian, who used a baguette as their baton during the throwers relay and ate it during the race. After asking one of the throwers, Emmett Wagennar, about the meet, he said, “It was a fun meet with plenty of personal records; some of us had allergic reactions, but we pulled through.” When asked about the team, he said, “We did alright, but with a little more dedication and hard work, we can succeed in our goals.”
