The year 1998
By: Claire Emch
1998 was a year full of sports titles, academics, and activities. We won a banner with the title all sports champions that is currently hanging up in the gym. Everything about this year was extraordinary.
998’s Fall sports–volleyball, football, and boys and girls Cross Country all had great seasons. Volleyball ended the season with a record of 15-5 plus a third-place title in state and a trophy for sportsmanship. Football made it to the semi-finals with an overall record of 9-3. Boys Cross Country unfortunately didn’t make it to state but took third place in districts. And lastly for fall sports girls cross country had a great season and placed eighth in state. For winter sports- girls basketball won second place in state, took home a trophy, and ended the season with a record of 15-4. Boys basketball ended up placing fourth in the state and ended the season with a record of 14-4. Spring sports took a strong lead in boys’ and girls’ track, softball, and baseball. Boys track took fourth in the state and first in districts. Girl’s track had a notable season with a first-place state title and a first-place district title. Softball also had a strong season placed second in state and had four playoff games. Baseball had a great season with three playoff games.
Activities in 1998 were some to be remembered. The year kicked off with an amazing auction. Items like swing sets, a trailer, and even a car were sold. This auction was by far one of the most profitable and enjoyable. Spirit week took the school by storm with a tie for powder puff between the seniors and the juniors. The boys who played football acted as their cheerleaders and put on a show. For macho volleyball, the seniors won and were rewarded with a trophy. The homecoming dance was a hit and Alej Basl was crowned homecoming queen. There were many achievements throughout the summer such as Kylee Wagner placing 12th in the round for YMCA nationals in San Diego and a sophomore, Joan Claire, winning $3,500. The prom theme was moonlit paradise with Kara Klosterman crowned prom queen and Bart Bishop crowned prom king.
Finally, Academics; each class had its student council with a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and historian. 1998’s drama class was especially diverse with students from all grades. The play was called ‘If These Walls Could Talk’. At this time Regis was a lot bigger than it is now with 46 freshmen, 57 sophomores, 56 juniors, and 49 seniors. Timeless as always Mr. Bauer was a school counselor in 1998.
1998 was considerably one of our best years for academics and especially sports. All the school activities were huge turnouts and huge successes. Plus we got new trophies and banners that are currently hanging up in the gym. Academics were still successful this year. One thing is for sure, 1998 was one of Regis’s best years so far in its 60 years of existence.
