The Sacred Heart Stained Glass
By Gabriel Keough
The Dome at Regis High School is one place where the students can draw closer to God. One of the great features is the beautiful artwork in the chapel. It is designed to let students feel like God is close to them, and that he loves them. After having prayed there, I can say it really is a great place to worship. There are some beautiful pictures in the dome, with the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus pouring out his mercy for all of us.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a very important symbol for Christians. It’s usually depicted as a heart, pierced with a lance, and encircled by a crown of thorns. The heart also has a cross on top of it much of the time. The image of the heart was first heard of in Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Sacred Heart helps you meditate on all Jesus did for us, and it helps to focus on something specific like that when praying.
Keith Kintz, a Regis graduate, has made several stained glass images for the school, with the Sacred Heart as his masterpiece. When asked about his reasons for creating these images for the school, he replied, “I hope to have created a legacy that goes beyond my time on Earth.” A big part of the worship at Regis is the great sense of community you feel while worshiping with the rest of the school. It is one of the best parts of the week to go to Mass with the school. When you have great art to go and look at while praying, it helps the school come together, and it helps us focus on Jesus’ mercy.
