The Regis Hall of Fame

By Benjamin Valladares-Cormier

Instituted in 2022, the Regis Hall of Fame honors alumni, faculty/staff, and others who have earned recognition from the Hall of Fame Committee. There have been two induction ceremonies to the Hall of Fame since 2022. There are currently nine people on the Hall of Fame committee, most of whom are teachers and other faculty. The first Hall of Fame members consisted of  Doug & Karen Highberger and Dr. James Duffy, Sr. Marcella Parrish, S.S.M.O., Sr. Catherine Trtek, S.F.C.C., Msgr. Gregory Moys, Joe Spenner and the 1966 Varsity Baseball State Championship Team.

The baseball team was inducted because they were the first state championship team at Regis only three years after the founding of the school. In the quarterfinals of that championship season, Regis crushed Gaston in an overwhelming 7-0 win. The semi-final team, McKenzie, who had an 8-4 win in their previous game, seemed like a good opponent. Unfortunately for them, they didn’t stand a chance against Regis as they played a devastating 12-2 semi-final win for Regis. Finally came the long-awaited championship game against Pilot Rock. The hard-fought game ended in a 4-1 loss for Pilot Rock and Regis won their first State Championship title within the first three years of existence as a school! The MVP was Jerry Weiss and the Rams coach was Coach Kehoe.

Regis’ second induction was Deacon Chuck Amsberry, Fr. John Amsberry, Ralph & Louise Bochsler, Larry Etzel,  Mrs. Stuckart, Norma Mack, Msgr. Timothy Murphy, Rich Tabor and the 1973 Regis State Championship Team. The state title won by the football team really put Regis on the map. The team kicked off the play-off season by playing Harrisson and beating them in a 7-0 win. For the semi-final they then played Concordia Lutheran and crushed them in a 26-0 game-winner. Regis was nervous with anticipation for the final game against Pine-Eagle. The final score ended with a 13-0 championship title for Regis.

Along with the football team, Mrs. Stuckart, class of 1979, was elected into the Hall of Fame. Mrs. Stuckart(D-D) was one of the most gifted female athletes that had ever attended Regis. She was a letterman all four years of high school. She was on Regis’ first female basketball team as a shooting guard. By her junior year, they made it 3rd in the state. In her senior year, Mrs. Stuckart was the team’s Most Valuable Player. “My best memories were when our coach, Joe Rossitto, took us on a Christmas trip for team building…I enjoyed the aspect of playing basketball with friends.” Mrs. Stuckart  also participated in varsity volleyball, cheerleading, and track and field. In all the sports she played her team went to state at least once. Mrs. Stuckart set two school records that still stand at Regis with an 11.8-second 100-yard sprint and 27.6-second 220-yard sprint.

The Hall of Fame hopes to continue to thrive with more people each year. The next induction will be on April 13, 2024.
