Regis Vs Heppner Football 11/11/23
By: Korben Schumacher
On November 11 2023 Regis High School took on Heppner High School, this game was anticipated to be one of the best games of the year. Heppner’s head coach said “They are a very talented football team, They bring everybody back from last year. They bring their passing game back and they have refined it. We will have to play really good defense. They have athletes and they will make plays. I feel like controlling the football and creating turnovers will be key It will be interesting to see our strength vs. their strength. We take pride in being disciplined and making people earn their yards. This is a team that can get yards in a hurry. They have four good receivers and a running back and can spread the field. We will have to be at our best. We are looking forward to it.”
In this game, Heppner did not have their star quarterback Landon Mitchell due to a broken collarbone. The game started out very slow with Heppner receiving the ball first, with their playstyle of running they ran play after play getting them to the 2-yard line on 4th down, they handed the ball off to Caden George and were rejected by a clutch tackle by Kollin Schumacher. Heppner still managed to strike first from a pick-six from Cameron Proudfoot which put the Rams down 0-6. But the Rams thrived when adversity came and on their next drive Kollin Schumacher dove in for a touchdown to put the Rams up 7-6, Following series the Rams stopped Heppner and got the ball back, and within five plays the Rams scored again with a handoff to Noah Richter. On the following drive, Kollin Schumacher added another touchdown to make the score 20-6 going into the half. In the second half, the Rams were held to 6 points and Heppner made a comeback to narrow the score to 21-20 but a throw from Kollin Schumacher to Parker Bartholomew resulted in a touchdown to seal the game for the Rams 27-20.
This was one of my favorite games I have played in my whole high school career because it was an intense back-and-forth game between two great teams. The energy brought by the players and the fans could be felt on the field. I hope to experience many more games like this during the rest of my time playing football at Regis.
