Regis History: Girl’s Basketball Five-Peat

By: Clara Persons

The Regis Girl’s five-peat all began in 2010 with a 3A State title. A few of the members of the team were Kayla Dolby, Lauren Alley, Rachel Buck, Kasse Keudell, and Whitney Kohnke. At the State tournament, they played Willamina, Burns, and Vale in the championship. The final game against Vale was played at the Cone Field House in Salem, where the girls won 52-39. Their overall season record was 23-4, and they were coached by Jeff Kohnke and Jason Kohnke. This Championship set the tone for the next four years.

In 2011, the Ram Girls did it again, having a 29-1 season, only losing one game to Marist High School. The Regis Girls won the 2A State Championship game against Scio who had a record of 25-5. The score was 41-21! This game took place at the Pendleton Convention Center. This led them to another state title. Yet again they were coached by Jeff Kohnke and Jason Kohnke. The Ram Girls had now won two championships in a row!

In 2012, the Ram Girls officially achieved three-peat State Champs, ending the season they went 27-3. That was senior Whitley Kohnke’s last year at Regis, where she got to be a part of another 2A state title. The State tournament once again took place at the Pendleton Convention Center where they took on Riverdale, Santiam, and Scio in the championship. Scio also had a record of 27-3 but they fell short once again to the Regis. The girls won 59-49 to take home another title.

In 2013, the Regis girl’s basketball team had an overall record of 26-3! That year they won another 2A State Basketball Championship when they played Union in the Championship. Union’s overall season record was 21-8, and the Rams won 60-48. That was now the Ram’s fourth consecutive State Championship, and the final year that they were coached by Jeff Kohnke and Jason Kohnke. They coached these girls through four State Championships.

In 2014, the Regis girl’s basketball team achieved a five-peat. Their overall record was 28-2, having yet another successful season, coached by Kyle Tower and Dustin Lulay. They played Western Mennonite in the Championship game who had a record of 25-5. The Regis girls won 36-29 winning the 2A State Championship!

From 2010 to 2014, the Regis girl’s basketball team had amazing athletes that accomplished something many other schools have not. Throughout their years they had great coaches that helped them achieve this goal. This five-peat is something Regis High School should remember in the years to come. Through hard work and determination, the Regis girl’s basketball team did something great together.
