Regis’ First Basketball Championship Win

By: Trayton Hume

In 2003, the Varsity Boy’s Basketball team won their first state championship and had a very successful season. Of the 22 games they played during the season, they won 20. The only teams strong enough to beat our 2003 basketball team were Western Mennonite and Gervais, both of which we played twice and beat the first time.

The two coaches that season were Jeff and Jason Koehnke, and the players on the team were Lawernce Silbernagel, Bryan Koehnke, Drew Church, Nathan Keudell, Daniel Weis, Tyler Lulay, Ricky Brentano, Austin Moothart, Chris Duman, Austin Highberger, Blake Muscardin, Ryan Butler, and Luke Jaeger. As you can see, it was a large team.

They played various games and teams. Here is a complete list of the games they played and mostly won against almost all of the other teams. Santiam, W 81-57, Chemawa, W 78-41, Colton, W 95-50, Blanchet, W 79-30, Salem Academy, W 81-51, Kennedy, W 70-56, Scio, W 64-34, Gervais, W 69-66, Western Mennonite, W 54-53, Santiam, W 55-49, Chemawa, W 75-47, Colton W 75-47, and Blanchet, W 72-35.

The rest are Salem Academy, W 57-54, Kennedy, W 72-56, Scio, W 58-25, Gervais, L 49-52, Western Mennonite, L 54-56, East Linn, W 63-56, Brandon, W 67-54, St.Mary’s, W 62-45, and Dayton, W 52-47. Regis won the championship against Dayton 52-47, and their record for the year was 24-3.  As I previously mentioned, we had a great season.
