Regis Baseball Team 2024
By: Ethan Emch
The Regis Rams baseball team excelled in their 2024 season, but it didn’t entirely end the way they wanted it to end. Falling to North Douglas in the state quarterfinals, the team will be graduating four great leaders who, according to head coach Kyle Baker, are “four seniors that left a legacy in the Regis Baseball program.” The season had many ups and downs, from unlikely heroes to challenging games against out-of-state opponents. All of these combined for a great season that will be memorable for them all.
The Regis baseball team for the 2024 season was filled with many returning players and many newcomers to the program. Six freshmen combined to be the largest number of students on the team, with Korben Schumacher, Owen Eaton, Ethan Emch, Jake Bohnke, Ben Vallederes-Cormier, and Harper Stoops all representing the program’s future. The sophomore class was very small, with only one member on the team. That player was Rook Smith, who, even though he was the only tenth grader on the team, brought a considerable presence to the team. The 11th grade had four players, all being returning ones from the previous year. As represented by Bryson Nygren, Tanner Lawson, Luke Castillo, and Trevon Keunzi, the junior class had a huge presence, as almost all were regular starters. The seniors who had played a big part in previous success were rounding out the lineup. Noah Koenig, Kollin Schumacher, Max Eaton, and Parker Bartholomew made up the team’s foundation, which consisted of the four 12th graders. These 15 players defined the Regis Rams baseball program in 2024 as they looked to make a run into the playoffs.
The season started in mid-March with the Rams having their first game and first win against Horizon Christian, a 3A opponent in Tualatin. Following this game were three straight losses to Umpqua Valley Christian, Country Christian, and Santiam Christian, all of which were lost by two runs or less. Then came the team’s spring trip to Arizona, where they tied the second game 20-20 after losing the first. By the time the 3rd game rolled around, we had cleaned up our act, winning 7-3, and we kept that winning streak and won 8-6 in the 4th and final game. Harper Stoops said, “We beat the best 2a team in Colorado, so we are the best 2a team in Colorado!”
The team carried that winning energy to the league games. The Rams Baseball team won 18 games out of 18, becoming undefeated league champions. Coach Kyle Baker said he “always wanted to win a league championship.” But this 18-win League champions didn’t come without hard work. The team spent hours in practice training hard, and, rain or shine, the team was out on the field practicing. This season had some excellent memories. Coming out of the season and into playoffs Regis started at round 2 since they were top 10. They beat Culver 1-0, but the Rams lost to North Douglas 0-1 and that was the end of the season for the Rams.
