Preparing the Turkey Unexpectedly
By Calista Anglin
Thanksgiving is coming, so people must be ready for their relatives to gather together or have their dinner if they can’t go. Some people celebrate Thanksgiving differently, but I will share one of my experiences with this holiday. It’s a simple story of what happened to me last year at my household.
It was a few days before Thanksgiving, and I was thrilled to eat the food. I was chilling in the living room until my dad called me to the kitchen. Unaware of what was happening, my dad said, “Help me prepare the turkey.” I was surprised as I never knew how to do it then. When he showed me the raw turkey and told me that I had to pull out some stuff with my bare hands, I was pretty disgusted by this as I don’t like to touch raw meat with my hands. Even though I didn’t want to, my dad told me to suck it up and do it. I took out the neck, the heart in a plastic sack, and some plastic strands that supported the turkey for the stuffing.
After finishing, my dad told my sister to help my dad, and I made a turkey juice that gave the turkey flavor. After preparing the turkey juice, we dumped it in the liquid and put it in the refrigerator in the laundry room for it to soak for the rest of the night. The next night, Dad didn’t need help putting it in the oven as he did it himself. On Thanksgiving, my relatives came, and we enjoyed the already-cooked turkey. Even though I didn’t like preparing the turkey for the first time, at least we enjoyed a delicious meal. And ever since that day, I have been mentally preparing myself as I might do it again this Thanksgiving.
