Kenzie’s Freshmen Year in Review
By Kenzie Schacher
My freshmen year was a year full of joy, fun, and chaos. It was a rollercoaster of a year with positive outcomes as well as negative ones. I learned a lot of patience and kindness throughout the course of the year. At the beginning of the year, the rest of my peers and I began to learn how things happen here at Regis. The first two weeks of school were made up of easy step-by-step procedures and instructions. Once we began getting the hang of things around campus, sports started up. My favorite part of the fall was football. Even though I do not play it, it is very enjoyable to watch. It is one of my favorite sports to witness. While football was going, I played volleyball. I felt honored to be one of the two freshmen players that made it on varsity.
The winter was a difficult time for me personally. With it being the middle of the year, everyone, including me, was ready for winter break. Winter means the start of a new sport. That sport was basketball. We started off strong, beating Jefferson, a 3A school, on the first game. The season continued and we began to struggle a little more than we should have. Bandon was a rough way to end the season. It was our play-in game to make it to Pendleton. We were up by one in overtime because the refs forgot to give Clara Persons another shot. She shot the one they gave her and scored. We ended up not arguing with the ref and went into overtime when we shouldn’t have. We ended up losing that game and had a four hour drive to relish it.
Softball was a lot better than basketball. We began the season teaching the girls that have not played in awhile or at all. The first few practices were rough but we began to dial it in after a lot of reps with pitching, fielding, and hitting. We ended up placing in the middle of the state-wide rankings and sixth in our league. I won honorable mention pitcher while Hadley Foster won honorable mention first base and Mayla Manning won honorable mention infield. Aside for athletics, I ended semester one with the highest GPA in my class with a top student award for honors physics. I helped with the fall play by being on the crew. For the musical, I was Thalia, a Greek muse. I was one of the main characters. Overall, It was a good year and I hope to have the next three be the same.
