History Of the Gerding Family At Regis

By: Liam McSorley

Other than the McSorleys currently at Regis, there have been at least five Gerdings to go here. Amanda, Bernard, Emily, Anna, and Katrina. This is their school story.

Amanda graduated from Regis in 1997, after a very illustrious school experience. She was in the same class as Mrs. Miotke, and apparently, they studied together often. She ran Cross Country in her senior year and was quite good at it. She was also a Track and Field Athlete and helped the team to a third-place finish in the state competition in 1997. She was also named Homecoming Queen in one of her years.

Bernard was in the class of ‘99, right on the cusp of the new century. In his senior year, he was the Activities Director of Regis. He was on the Track team and was a wrestler at some point in his school career. 1999 was also the year that Regis held a “Mike Bauer Day,” where they celebrated everything Coach Bauer had done for the school and his 25th anniversary of working at Regis.

Emily was the first of the Gerding family to graduate in the twenty-first century. Her graduation year was 2002, a whopping twenty-two years ago. She was a part of the Alaska trip, where a group of students went on a voyage to the Final Frontier. She also did Track and Field, running the 3000 and 1500-meter races. That year, our sports were quite successful.

Annie graduated from here in 2003. She had quite an eventful senior year, including being chosen as the Homecoming Queen, the second in her family. She was, and is, incredibly smart. She was chosen by the Statesman Journal as an Academic All-Star. She is also featured in the photo that is attached to this article.

Katrina graduated in 2005 and was the last of the Gerding siblings to graduate from Regis. She did Track and Field, which seems to be a recurring theme with the Gerding family. Katrina did shotput and hurdles and was quite good at them. She also did cheerleading and partially did cross country for a couple of years.

On the religious side, many of them were Eucharistic Ministers, or as the title is called, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Katrina was, for one, and Bernard might’ve been one too. There wasn’t much supporting the idea that the others were as well, but it is extremely likely.

Overall, the Gerdings had a great experience here at Regis High School. They flourished in the Catholic environment, becoming stronger like carbon crushed into a diamond. That group of siblings spread out over ten near-consecutive years, all did extremely well then, and now.

Special thanks to Amanda Gerding, Katrina Gerding, and Dr. Jim Tabor for their help with this article.
