History of Regis Cheer Team
By: Ainslee Hume
The Regis cheer team started around the year 1965. Since then, our RHS cheer team has gone up and down for around 59 years. The main problem the Regis cheer team had was getting people to join. The largest cheer team this high school has ever had included 18 cheerleaders and is our most recent cheer team. This team has seven seniors, four juniors, two sophomores, and five freshmen.
The cheerleading team of 1997 had 15 cheerleaders for the football season and 15 for the basketball season. Mrs. Miotke was one of the cheerleaders on this team, and she cheered with Mandy Shine, the current stunting coach. The 1997 cheer team did similar things to the 2024 cheerleading team; preps, fulls, hitches, and cradles. However that cheerleading team had different cheer captains every week, and they would rotate throughout the entire cheer squad. This is different from the current cheer team which has two specific cheer captains, both seniors.
The cheer team uniforms have changed multiple times throughout its history. Both in 1997 and 2024 the cheer team had pleated skirts, although different colors. But during 2008 the skirts were straight down with no flare. In 1997 they did their hair in various ways, such as braids, low ponies, and high ponies. The 1997 cheerleaders did competitions, and cheer camps, and participated in basketball halftime show tournaments with other cheerleaders, and during Mrs. Miotke’s senior year, they took first place in this event.
The high school cheerleading teams also had a change of poms over the years. The team from 1997 had multicolored poms with green and gold. In 2005 the cheer team had a vast change in uniforms and changed to two white poms. The current 2024 cheerleaders went back to green and gold and currently have one green and one gold pom. Our cheer teams have had many changes since the beginning.
The Regis High School cheer team has been a great way to get school spirit going during its existence. In 1997 and 2024, both cheer teams participated in school rallies, cheer camps, and competitions. This successfully boosts high school spirit. Having a cheer team at your high school is a great opportunity to get involved in school spirit and talk to people. It’s important to have a cheer team at football games, it’s a great way to keep the crowd on their feet during time-outs and quarters.
