History of Regis 2000s

By: Adrianna Gilmore

I have decided to do the history of Regis’ article about Regis in the 2000s. A few of the main events of Regis in the 2000s were the father-daughter brunch, the mom and son dinner, and 20 years at Regis. The father-daughter brunch was the senior girls and their dads having a brunch. This event was held in May. The girls posed and took photos with their dads and the background was a bedroom. The mom and son dinner didn’t state any details but the senior boys who participated were Eric Bielenberg, Doug Naugle, Drew Koehnke, Pat Pileggi, Nick Bender, Nick Churchill, Erick Etzel, and Chris Roberts. 20 years at Regis was celebrating Mr. McGrew for his 20th year teaching at Regis. Mr. McGrew received a gift from each of the classrooms. He also got a visit from his father who lives in Hawaii.

Joseph Francis Spenner also known as Joe was part of many of the regis staff members. He was born October 23, 1921, in Stayton to Francis and Mary Spenner and passed away December 25, 2016, in Salem. He grew up on the family farm in Sublimity with his 3 brothers William, Benjamin, and Vincent. In 1940 he and his class were the first graduating class at St. Boniface High School in Sublimity. He worked at St. Boniface until Regis opened in 1963 and he began as the custodian/maintenance man for many years, by 2008 he had over 50 years of service to Catholic Schools. When he was older he traveled to India multiple times so he could assist Catholic Priests to build churches and a dispensary. He has built up a strong community even if that meant walking to work in the pouring rain during winter. He has shown his commitment and dedication to the schools. Rest in peace, Joe Spenner.

The 2000s Regis class had a following of 44 graduates with 20 boys and 24 girls. The graduating senior boys were Nickolas Bender, Eric Bielenberg, Joseph Blades, Nicholas Churchill, Eric Anthony, Andrew Koehnke, Paul Lulay, Adrian Mack, Ryan Meldrum, Patrick Pileggi, Christopher Roberts, Benjamin Schumacher, Craig Namitz, Douglas Naugle, Aron O’Donnell, Robert Watson, Jeffrey Schwindt, Karl Stevens, Benjamin Foltz, and Casey Geraths. The Graduating senior girls were Bronwen Bennett, Katherine Bielemiez, Theresa Branch, Rachel Brokaw, Elizabeth Brown, Julie Butler, Sarah Esch, Tara Hendricks, Jessica Heuberger, Annette Louise, Jennifer Iverson, Laura Kloaterman, Joan Krautmann, Lindsey Lulay, Hailey Moothart, Annie Peters, Rhonda Pham, Faith Pierce, Mary Weis, Louise Wendell, Amanda Young, Wendy Ziglinski, Kara Sweistris, and Heidi Foessaler. Some of them are still involved in the school whether they’re helping out, their kids, nieces, or nephews go here, or both.

Regis is very big on community here are a few of the things Regis kids did to help the community and build acts of service. The Immersion Retreat members took time to pose for photos while working hard and having an amazing positive attitude. The sophomore boys helped clean all the school’s recycling bins to keep it clean. During the first annual coat drive, which collected 347 coats and blankets Doug Naugle, Sarah Esch, and Theresa Branch took a break from collecting coats and blankets to pose for a photo. The Giving Tree was decorated by Many Mooers and helped needy families get teddy bears, blankets, and cash to help.

In conclusion, Regis is an amazing school, and the 2000s were one of the coolest and really exciting years for Regis. Which Year do you think is your favorite? The 2000s held some entertaining and joyful events. The 2000s showed the commitment throughout Regis, from sports to just helping people and the school.
