Doug Lulay

By: Hayden Lulay

I will be doing my rampage article this week about my grandpa Doug, what he did for Regis, and what sports he played while he was here. My Grandpa Doug was an outstanding quarterback for Regis High School he played along with both of my outstanding uncles. One of my uncle’s names is Dennis Lulay. He played an important role as a wide receiver. He was really good and he was fast too. The second uncle is Leonard, he was an outstanding player and he also played wide receiver. While my grandpa Doug was at Regis they won the state championship three times in a row and that’s a really hard thing to do.

My Grandpa, Doug, always talks about how he was such a good quarterback to them that he always remembers playing Scio at their home turf and they blew them out of the water every single time that they played them. He remembers when he threw this bullet right at Dennis and he caught it in the in-zone to win the game and they both still remember that play to this day.  My Grandpa Doug always talks to me about how they won the state championship three times in a row and he hopes that I do the same with my two brothers. In high school, he broke tons of state records. When he was in high school it was pretty cool, he said.

After high school, my grandpa Doug committed to a college close to Stayton at Western Oregon University. He was also a star there just like in high school but he did a lot better. He passed for incredible numbers. It was really impressive. If you go to Western Oregon University you can just say Doug Lulay and people know who he is. When he was in college he got into the Hall Of Fame while he was at Western Oregon University it was really exciting to hear about that too.  After he graduated from Western Oregon, he played several years in the baseball minor leagues for the San Diego Padres.

My Grandpa  Doug, is a legend at this school and I hope that I can do the same thing as what he did here but better and I can do it with my brothers alongside me. I want to get trophies for the trophy case here at Regis and even more for baseball and football. With hard work, I believe I can be a better athlete than my grandpa ever was. For football, Regis has won state so many times with my Grandpa Doug and my two uncles and that was hard to do in high school. But somehow they did it and it was unbelievable. Still, to this day, my grandpa is friends with his teammates and they still get together. So the football community is amazing. They make bonds that last a lifetime and my grandpa and his buddies are like that and it’s cool to think about.

Dennis,  Leonard, and my grandpa’s dad died two years ago but he inspired them when they were little kids to play football and that’s what they did and they did amazing things just because his dad told them to. My grandpa’s dad’s name is Clement Lulay.  He also was good at football and baseball but my Grandpa Doug was the best athlete out of his family.  I love talking to him about sports. It’s like the best thing to do ever. He gives me so many tips on how to throw a good spiral and just be a good overall player and I’m thankful for him that he says that about me.
