A Little Slice of Germany

By: Sophie Wagner

Every year for four days only, Mount Angel hosts a german festival called Oktoberfest. Thousands of people come from all around just to attend the celebration. Booths and tents crowd the downtown streets of Mount Angel. On one side of the main road, there are food booths, while on the other side, there are tons of canopies selling all sorts of trinkets and clothes. Most people come for delicious food. Some foods they serve are elephant ears, Berliner sandwiches, schnitzel sandwiches, curly fries, doughboys, fish tacos, bratwurst, and so much more.

There are also several Biergartens, such as the Englegarten, Alpinegarten, Prostgarten, and the Weingarten, where one can find live entertainment and drink. Some local boys and girls practice during the summer and present numerous traditional dances for the public during Oktoberfest. Ava Spencer and Lina Rutkowski took part in a new tribute dance this year; “It was interesting and not traditional, but it was really fun.” says Ava. The dances are always fantastic and are performed by young kindergarteners to high schoolers and above.

There is so much to do at Oktoberfest, especially for someone who has never been before. Oktoberfest is also a super important fundraising event. Schools and organizations own the booths that sell food. So come to Oktoberfest next year!
