What is Fashion?

By: Claire Emch

Picture yourself with all the unlimited time and money in the world. Where would you be? What would you be doing? For me, I would be doodling clothing designs in my sketchbook. I love all things fashion: clothes, shoes, accessories, and especially dresses. The fashion world has four main fashion weeks: The Paris Fashion Week, The NYC Fashion Week, The Milan Fashion Week, and The London Fashion Week. Another popular fashion event is the Met Gala. The Met Gala annually takes place on the first Monday of May. The gala is a fundraiser and charity event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. There are five elements of fashion: line, form, space, texture, and color.

Along with the five pillars of fashion. Haute Couture, which is high-skilled clothing for the wealthy, includes brands like Dior, Prada, Chanel, Ralph Lauren, and Bvlgari. Ready-To-Wear, which is clothes made through the general market and sold in stores that include brands like Louis Vuitton, Versace, Donna Karan, and Burberry. Diffusion, which is inspired by ready-to-wear but has wider volumes of production and consists of brands like Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, Paul Smith, and Dsquared2. Next is a bridge, bridge fashion design bridges the gap between the mass market and high-end and includes brands like Hugo Boss, Clavin Klein, DKNY, and Michael Kors. The final pillar is the mass market, these brands target as many people as possible by providing fashion at affordable prices, which includes brands like Zara, GAP, American Eagle, and Mango. Fashion can help people express their creativity and their personality.
