The Regis history of the Twilight meet

By: Stuart McLaughlin

Every year at Regis, we hold the Regis Community Twilight meet in track and field. This tradition has been going on since 2013. It is one of the biggest meets Regis has, with usually over thirty teams and sometimes way more. As the title suggests, this meet is helped run by the Regis community. And why do we hold this meeting in the first place? Or you may want to know the history of this meeting. Well, this article will answer all of these questions.

To answer why we do the meet is so we can raise money for the track team. There were 48 sponsors, from small businesses in Stayton to Roth’s. The reason we raise money for the track team is so we can keep our track and facility as lovely as they are, and so we can afford new jerseys and equipment. The Regis community that helps out can be students, parents, and just volunteers from the Regis community who would like to help.

There have been many incredible times at the Regis Community Twilight meet. Just this year, in the woman’s 3k, Lauren Tittle from Oregon Epscipol ran a time of 10:0,5, making her the 9th in Oregon and 68th in the US. There have been so many impressive performances at the meets throughout the years. In fact, in all the events, 13 times ranked people in the top 50 of Oregon. Even if you don’t rank in the state, the number of athletes with personal records is off the chart.

Of all the athletes who raced this year, 120 had personal records, and 63 had season bests. This just shows how competitive and how important the meeting is every year. And this is just this year. Imagine how many excellent performances there have been over the past 11 years. There are so many records and season best at this meet because you have to be in the top two on your team to even get into the meet. That makes it pretty hard to get into. Then, athletes have to race the other top two athletes at the other school, and the different schools can have teams from 1A to 4A. And when you race against other athletes faster than you, it makes you push yourself. There is also the fact that this meet is the week before the districts and two meets before the state. So the athletes are trying their hardest now to get a good time so they can be ready for the final races.

Overall, the Regis community Twightlit is vital to the Regis track team. It not only raises money for the track team to make sure they always have a great season and keep the track in good condition. It allows teams to socialize and gain personal records against each other.
