The Motto of Regis

By Calista Anglin

A motto is a phrase based on a person or community’s beliefs and is a sign of identity depending on the goal or morals of the community. Regis’ motto is “Viva Cristo Rey! Que Viva!” which translates to “Long live Christ the King! Long live!” Regis chose this saying as their motto because it translates to “Christ the King” in Latin and it is a school that teaches the Catholic faith. Miguel Pro, a saint we learn about in theology class, proclaimed this slogan during the Cristero Rebellion. In this community, we learn things through the school’s core values and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the son of God, and he played an essential role in the Bible so at Regis we say, “Long live Christ the king!” because we want him to be eternal to distinguish between right and wrong. If we follow his teachings, then we can be inspired to not do wrong. The motto was originally longer: “Long live Christ the King and Our Lady of Guadalupe!” It was shortened because it would have been more challenging to remember and the purpose of a motto is to briefly and simply state your point. So again, Viva Cristo Rey! Que Viva!
