In their third league game, the Regis softball team defeated Gervais with a 13-3 deficit on Thursday, April 13, 2023. It was a significant day to play softball, especially after days of cancellations and rain.
Gervais opened up the game by scoring 3 runs in the first inning.
Amy Martinez led the Rams into the batter’s box, ready to hit. Amy Martinez, Mylah Etzel, and Kenzie Schacher all contributed to leveling out the score. Martinez tripled, Etzel walked, and Schacher was hit by a pitch. Lily Jepsen hit a line drive to advance Mylah and Kenzie home, allowing a 3-3 tie in the first inning with no outs.
The Rams switched positions and took the field with a 7-3 lead going into the second. In the middle of the inning, Ali Hendricks caught a resounding hit into center field, stealing what could have been a home run. “It felt great to not only make my teammates and coaches proud but to hear and feel the support from everyone around me,” Hendricks said. Pitching for the Rams in the first inning was Mayla Manning. She ended the inning with four hits allowed, three runs allowed, and one strikeout.
In the bottom of the second inning, a pitching switch was made. Gervais’ best player was placed in the pitcher’s circle. Taking advantage of the current and less structured defense, the Rams scored 6, allowing a 13-3 lead.
Throughout the rest of the game, the Rams gained two hits. Melissa Gonzalez singled at the top of the third, advancing to first base. Mayla Manning also singled at the top of the fourth, advancing to third on the next play. Kenzie Schacher pitched from the top of the second till the end of the game.
