Turkey Hunting

By: Jake Laube

Turkey hunting is something that I am new to, but I am hooked on hunting this beautiful bird. I enjoy hunting this bird because of its unique way of acting in wildlife. Some people in the city considered these giant birds pests they could be. These birds are known to scratch up your car windows a poop on your car.  However, these people have yet to learn and understand why they do these things honestly. Turkeys go through the mating season from April to May. This is a minor season compared to deer hunting or duck hunting, which makes it an even more significant challenge because the season is so much shorter. Did you know turkeys show what type of mood they are in the color of their red and blue means calm and relaxed, and white means  Turkeys fly into the trees at night, which is called the roost. That keeps them safe from all predators, such as raccoons, possums, skunks, coyotes and foxes. The female turkeys have their chicks during the summer months. They usually have about seven to ten, but by the end of the summer, they only have about three. This is because when the birds are very young, they can’t fly into the trees to keep themselves safe from predators, so they are sitting ducks. The male has many cool features such as beards which are black, feathers make it so they look cool and bigger if they are being attacked by predators and spurs, which are for defense or when fighting another turkey. All of these cool features are meant for the same purpose, to attract the attention of females. The hens are more of a planer color. Their feathers are a normal brown and their head is a shade of gray. Overall these animals have been able to survive for hundreds of years and becoming more popular to hunt.

these are males.
