Regis History: Cheer State Title!
By: Mary Hernandez
Regis cheer has a lot of incredible history that goes way back, as old as 2006! Regis High School has won three state titles in cheerleading which is crazy, and the team has grown a lot, not only with skills. The team has built a more positive community here at Regis. Even though we had a gap when we didn’t have cheerleaders for a while, when they came back, it seemed like they were never gone. People said they helped contribute to some of the wins we have had during the football and basketball seasons. The team kept a positive atmosphere around the school and for both teams. You can always count on the cheerleaders to make the games fun and exciting and get everyone involved! We could not have done it without the outstanding coach, Amanda Shine, which is Sophia Shine’s mother. Sophia now attends Regis just like her mother did and is in the class of 2026.
The first state achievement we had was the state competition in 2006. The team spent four months preparing until then. The competition took place in February at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland. The Regis cheerleading team went head to head with Yoncalla/North Douglas and their coach Alisha Templeton in category 2A/1A. Regis won first place with a score of 70.4, and the other team, with 70.2 was incredible. Regis was overwhelmed with happiness to add another abolishment to the gym finally. The team couldn’t be more thankful for their fantastic coach Amanda Shine. The girls were overjoyed and, as a team, planned to do it again next year.
After they triumphed again in 2008 with a great mindset, they were ready to do what it took to win and be number one! This year, the team competed in a tough competition again with show stunts, dance, and chant. It was very close this year in the 3A/2A/1A with more ground to cover. They did not back down and disappoint the others team. Putting up a good fight, Creswell lost and received second place with 57.0 points, and Regis came in first with 57.8 points! They proved many people wrong and proudly represented the school. With a lot of hard work and sweat, and conditioning to get to this point, it was very worth it!
Finally, last year we won state at the Memorial Coliseum, in Portland. This really shows how good of a couch we had she was so inspiring and Enthusiastic, and really cared about her team, and how dedicated they were to have a three-year streak. And now today we have cheerleaders again with the wonderful Mrs. Mendez, saying they hope to compete as well next year in state and other competitions. We hope to recruit more great girls to the program and learn more skills and dances for next year!
It was such an excellent experience to be able to learn about the history of cheerleading that was right under our noses the whole time and wasn’t too long ago. I hope that we will continue to have our cheerleaders and hopefully win another state championship title while I’m still in high school. We still have a long way to go, so maybe we can learn a thing or two from history to help us see what works. Thank you to all the coaches and ladies who made our school great!
