Basketball Champs

Regis has been around since 1963. Next year we celebrate its sixtieth anniversary! Through all its trials and victories, Regis has earned a reputation. We’ve done quite well in sports over the last sixty years, for both the girls and boys. We’ve gone to state for football, baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball, and more. Have you ever looked at the student center’s trophy case? Well, it’s there that you can see every triumph we have accomplished. In this Ram Page article, I’ve written about our previous years in girls’ basketball.

The girls’ basketball team has gone to state numerous times. In 2001 and 2017, we placed sixth place. Then we placed third in 1978 and second in 1998, which was an outstanding achievement. Mark Stevens was the coach who led us to that victory. While these wins are notable, our Regis girls didn’t stop there. They went beyond and conquered the state championship!

The Regis girls’ basketball team did not win the championship just once. In 2010, coaches Jeff and Jason Koehnke led the girls to state. They had practiced long and hard to get there and made it. They played their hardest, gave their all, and won first place in the state! It was a proud moment for our school. These girls set the bar high for the following season in 2011. Once again, the team made it to state with the help of their coaches, Jeff and Jason. They wondered, “can we make it to first place a second year in a row?” Yes, they could, and they did, bringing home yet another trophy proudly placed for display.

Our state titles did not stop there. The Koehnke coaches trained the team harder than ever. In 2012, the girls brought home another first-place trophy. They have already won three first-place titles three years in a row. Yet again, in the 2013 season, we won first in the state. 2013 was the last year for the coaches Jeff and Jason Koehnke. Would the champion streak continue without them? That is the question everyone was wondering in 2014 when coaches Kylie Tower and Dustin Lulay arrived. The answer came when the girls made it to state once more…and the basketball girls received the first-place trophy for the fifth year in a row!

Regis could not have been prouder of the basketball girls. Not only did they make it to first place in state, but for five years back to back! We can only imagine the pressure the girls faced during the championship games each year. Those girls have made their mark in this school and will forever go down in Regis history. We will always hope to get first in the state again as they did. This year, treat our girls’ basketball team with support and enthusiasm. If our girls gain a fierce and persevering attitude this season, we will make it to the state championship.

Here’s a picture of the basketball they used during the championship day:
