My Experience with Golf

By: Gage Baughman

Every Wednesday is our exploratory class, and I am in golf class with Mr. Dickey and Mr. Bauer. During that time, we learned the safety that goes into golf. Mr. Dickey taught the class that the golf club can be a lethal weapon and it can badly injure someone if you aren’t careful. He showed us how to place our hands on the golf club and how to swing it properly.  Then the class went over to the chipping station which is where you would try to hit the ball into the post. You would do this over and over again until you run out of all your golf balls. Next, you go out and pick up all the golf balls, and then go back and try to chip more. Soon after, we were able to practice hitting the golf balls on the actual mini course at Regis in our groups and compare at the end which group did the best out of the rest. We ended the class by having a competition to see who was the best putter, and whoever made it received a free coupon for a root beer float at A&W.

In the second and third week of Wednesday’s exploratory class, we started with more chipping practice and also practiced hitting on the actual golf course at Regis. We had another competition to see who had improved the most with their golf skills. After that, we tried playing the mini-course again to get better before we went to an actual golf course. We went to an actual driving range to practice hitting with our drivers. Unfortunately, I do not know how to hit the golf ball that far, so for me it will be a learning experience. I plan to actually try going on a golf course during the weekend to make a hole with a good score.

This past Wednesday, we went to a Salem course. The first thing we did was split up into groups and practice hitting putters, hitting drivers, and hitting irons. I started out on putters and we practiced putting from hole to hole and how we should swing the putter. Then we switched to drivers and Mr. Bauer show me and the rest of the group the way we should hit a driver. At first, I was terrible with the driver, but after a couple of minutes, I improved a huge amount and was able to hit the golf ball a good distance. At the end of the golf class, we had a putt-off to see who has improved the most with their golf skills. I had a really good learning experience and I now know how to hit a driver. All in all, I think golf has been really fun and I’m excited about my next exploratory class.
