2003 Girl’s Track and Field Team
By Kate Stelljes
Regis High School has had a long history of successful sports and dedicated athletes. Girl’s 2003 track and field was no exception. This was an amazing group of girls with lots of spirit, good sportsmanship, and the ability to work hard. They accomplished many things in the spring season of 2003.
This year, the girls’ track and field had a great turnout of girls who came to participate in this spring sport. Nine newly arrived freshmen were a great addition to the track team at Regis. They joined and competed with the 27 returning athletes from the previous year’s track team at Regis. This was a hardworking, pleasing, and lively group of girls, and the new additions to the team seemed to fit in with this mindset.
They were coached by an exceptional group of experienced people, two of which were also teachers at Regis at the time. The coaches included Coach Voltin, Coach Bauer, Coach McGrew, and Coach Conrad. They were all very supportive, encouraging, and skillful in their abilities to help and understand their student athletes.
Regis’ 2003 girl’s track team was very successful in their season. They took first in every meet they competed in, including the district meet, which qualified them for a place at state. The previous year’s girls’ track team had also qualified for a place at state, but failed to win the championship. This year’s girls, however, would rise to the challenge and bring home the state championship with a win! The girl’s track team of 2003 was the first girl’s track team to be state champs at Regis since 1998.
Regis won state with a total of 53.50 points and Imbler came in second place with 43 points. Putting their skills to the test, the girls competed in many events. In the 100-meter dash, Katie Lulay placed 6th with 13.56s. Kristi Beggs placed 5th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.98s. The 4×100 relay team, Kala Goodman, Nicole Silbernagel, Rachel Parker, and Katie Lulay placed 6th place in 52.1s. Ashley Parker placed 4th in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.48s, 2nd place in triple jump with a distance of 35-10.50, and placed first in the long jump at 17-06. Rachel Parker also took part in the long jump and placed 8th at 5-01. In the pole vault Monica Brown came in 7th place with 8-09 and Kara Bochsler tied at 8th place with 8-00. Jaclyn Espinoza placed 3rd in the shot put with a distance of 39-02.25 and came in first place in the discus at 123-10. Rebeca Voltin also competed in the discus and placed 8th with 103-05. The girls gave it their all and their efforts were rewarded in the end with an amazing outcome.
This group of girls succeeded at many things and was determined to not let any barriers stand in their way of success. These girls not only won the State meet, but they also ended the season breaking four of the school records. Freshmen Jaclyn Espinoza broke the record in the discus, Jacki Butler in the javelin, and Ashley Parker broke both school records in the triple jump and long jump. Nothing could prevent these girls from accomplishing great things.
The girl’s 2003 track team worked hard and had fun throughout the season. The Regis community was proud of them as they demonstrated the kind of sportsmanship Regis strived for. The girls enjoyed themselves and were ecstatic at all they accomplished. Rachel Parker said, “We had many great accomplishments this year, including being state champions! It was an awesome season and I had a lot of fun!” Kala Goodman can be remembered saying “This year was great! Being a part of the 6th place 4×100 team at state was awesome, and we are going for the school record next year!” After all the girls had achieved this year, they would continue to set and break their goals winning state for the second time in a row the following year. When the team of 2003 was set to a challenge there was no doubt that they would give it their best and overcome their obstacles. This group of girls will always be remembered throughout Regis’ history.
